Young Social Democrats

Who we are?

We are a national partisan youth-led political organziation. We stand for social democratic values such as equality, justice, solidarity and freedom for all. We believe that everyone should share the benefits of society, including adequate income, education, internet usage etc. The Young Social Democrats have been the official youth arm of the Social Democratic Party since 1992 and is the oldest political youth organization in Estonia.

Who are our members?

Our members come from all walks of life who are interested in society and politics. Their occupations vary widely from students to young workers, young professionals and young families. Per our articles of association members age can be anywhere from 15 to 30 years, though the 18-26 year old group tends to be most active.

What do we do?

The programs and campaigns of Young Social Democrats are aimed at building sustainable ongoing youth movement and encouraging discussion of civic particiation. Activities include seminars, training, international cooperation, debates, camping, and field trips.
The major event of the year is the Baltic Summer Academy which is a joint summer camp for young social democrats from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Throughout the camp members can engage in peer-to-peer discussions and participate in various programs that prepare them to serve as future local and national leaders.
Young Social Democrats also have a political agenda which is routinely updated. Different political ideas, philosophies and their practical use in modern politics are discussed and debated. The current focus is centered on young voter participation (including the debate over the right to vote for those over the age of sixteen), social support for students, and policies regarding alcohol consumption amongst young.

This is an exciting time to be a young social democrat. Our members acquire a new knowledge base, meet interesting and powerful people, make friends for life and acquire new experiences that will be relevant in their careers such as public relations, event planning, putting together presentations, public speaking and an ability to lead an organization.
Membership in the Young Social Democrats provides an essential framework for young people to enage in partisan civic participation and to debate and research issues of national and/or international importance.. The member will get an overview and theoretical knowledge of the government, appreciate the role of the citizen in a democratic country, political decision making processes, etc.
